How do we celebrate New Year in Italy?
2017 should be started with a full stomach.
For this, it is essential to think about the...
Cenone di Capodanno
On New Year’s Eve, , many Italians go out together with family and friends for dinner to celebrate St.
Sylvester’s feast day.
If Christmas in Italy is strongly family-oriented, New Year’s Eve is much less.
You have to know that, in Italy, the traditional New Year’s Eve meal represents abundance. That’s
what you’re hoping for the new year! In Turin or Milan, for example, rice represents coins. Because of
this in Italy, lots of dishes contain lentils (a symbol of wealth) and raisins (they bring good luck).
One especially popular dish is lentils served with cotechino, a big pork sausage boiled for about four
hours before being served.
You might also notice zampone, a sausage enveloped in a hollowed out pig trotter. This sausage is
cut into pieces which look like coins… so this too, of course, will help to bring wealth for the new
year!
